Least Concern

Hello there! My name is Rupert! I’m a Red Lionfish.

My family and I live on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. I have over 200 cousins of different species. Like many of my cousins, I have venom-filled spines in several of my fins, but I only use them for defense.

I got my name because I’ve got beautifully colored fin rays that resemble a lion’s mane. I can also be territorial and get really grumpy when you wake me up in the morning. Do you get grumpy when you get woken up too?

I prefer to ambush my prey. I’ll sit really still waiting for a fish to get close, and then I pounce! I extend my jaw and create a whole bunch of suction, which causes the fish to get sucked into my mouth where I swallow it whole. I’m not a picky eater either. Pretty much any fish that fits goes in. But I have to be careful, because large bony fish and sharks are on the lookout for me!

I enjoy exploring new areas and seeing new sights. Do you like to travel too? Where do you like to go?

You can take Rupert home with you!
