Hi! I’m Marvin the Mantis Shrimp! I’m a Peacock Mantis Shrimp.

My family and I live on Indo-Pacific coral reefs and sand flats. I have over 450 cousins of different species in other tropical and subtropical marine habitats!

My cousins and I are brightly colored, but I’m the brightest of them all. Females in my family are mostly red, but males like me have more greens and blues on our exoskeletons, which means my skeleton is on the outside of my body.

I can do something super cool. Want to know what it is? I have the fastest punch in the animal kingdom! That’s how I catch my prey, and it’s even been known to break aquarium glass. It’s the best way to open the thick shells of snails, crabs, shrimp, and other crustaceans.

I also have some pretty cool eyes. I can see in more wavelengths of color than pretty much anyone else, which means the coral reef where I make my burrow is a super colorful place for me!

I like to watch the fish float by with all their brilliant colors. What do you like to do?

You can take Marvin home with you!
