Hi! I’m Brian the Blue Crab! Some people call me an Atlantic Blue Crab.

I live on the soft bottoms of estuaries, which is the mouth of a large river where the tide meets the stream. My family lives mostly along the east coast of the United States and in the Gulf of Mexico, but some have wandered as far south as Argentina! Can you find that on a map? That’s a long way away so I don’t get to see them often.

I like to eat just about anything I can find. Plants and animals are all really tasty! Do you like sea lettuce as much as I do?

I have ten legs and have a spiny exoskeleton, which means that my skeleton is on the outside of my body instead of the inside. This protects me from a lot of things that would like to eat me, like fish and birds. Every time I grow I have to shed my exoskeleton and grow a new one below it, which takes a lot of energy.

My exoskeleton won’t protect me from everything though. Humans love to eat me and my family. We’re the target of one of the largest crab fisheries outside of Alaska! My family has gotten a lot smaller because of this and several disease outbreaks, but it seems like we could be making a comeback in some places as stronger regulations are placed on the fisheries.

I like to bury myself under mud in the winter and wait for spring. What’s your favorite thing to do in the winter?

You can take Brian home with you!
